If you’ve been thinking about going solar, don’t wait for the snow to melt to get started.
While solar installation isn’t ideal during the coldest winter months here in the Okanagan and surrounding areas, winter is still a strategic time to take the first step. At Swiss Solar Tech, we pause all on-site installations from mid-December through February for safety and quality reasons but that doesn’t mean planning should be put on hold.
Here’s why winter is the perfect opportunity to begin your solar journey, and how to get a head start for a smooth, stress-free installation once your roof is snow-free.
Why We Don’t Install Solar in the Winter
We take great pride in the quality of our work and the safety of our team. Due to the harsh and unpredictable winter conditions in BC, installations may be postponed for the following reasons:
- Asphalt Shingles Crack in the Cold: Installing panels on asphalt-shingle roofs below -5°C can damage the shingles and compromise your roof.
- Metal Roofs Become Slippery: Snow and moisture create unsafe conditions, especially on sloped metal roofs where slipping is a major hazard.
- Tile Roofs Are Prone to Breakage: When temperatures drop, some tile roofing may act almost like glass and can crack under foot traffic during installation.
- Frozen Ground Stops Ground-Mount Projects: We can’t trench or run conduit, and we certainly can’t pour concrete for support structures when the soil is frozen solid.
We believe in doing it right the first time—and that means waiting until weather conditions allow us to start installations without compromising your roof.
Why Winter is the Ideal Time to Plan Ahead
If you’re hoping to go solar next year, now is the time to prepare. Taking these steps during the off-season ensures your home or business is ready to go once installation season begins once daytime temperatures rise to 0 degrees or above.
Here’s how you can take advantage of the winter window:
Book Your Free Site Evaluation Early
Scheduling your on-site solar consultation now ensures we have time to:
- Assess your roof or property
- Review your energy usage
- Design a custom solar system tailored to your needs
- Discuss panel types, layout, and energy output goals
Plus, early consults allow us to book your system into our Spring installation queue—before the rush starts.
Prepare for Net Metering & Permits
Depending on your utility provider (FortisBC or BC Hydro), there may be paperwork required for interconnection and net metering. We’ll guide you on:
- What information you’ll need
- Where to find application forms
- How timelines may vary by region
You’ll be ahead of the game by having these details sorted now—not scrambling later.
Handle Electrical or Roof Upgrades
Does your electrical panel need upgrading? Is your roof in need of repair or replacement before installing solar?
Winter gives you time to:
- Book a solar electrician to assess your panel
- Coordinate with a roofer if needed
- Spread out project timelines for less stress
Learn About Your Solar Options Without Pressure
Winter consultations allow for informed, no-pressure decision-making. You’ll have time to:
